John, as I know him

A memory from Hannah Costa

Although I only know John through brief interactions over the last couple of years, he made a lasting impression on me.

I would often see him when he stopped by the office with a drink in hand for Melissa. What always made me smile was that it seemed to be a different drink every time. I never knew if there was a story behind that, but it became one of those little things I came to associate with him.

The visits were usually short, but they spoke volumes. In those small moments, it was impossible not to notice how much he loves his daughter. And just as noticeable was the love and warmth Melissa has for him in return. Their connection is something special to witness, even as a new friend from the sidelines.

What stood out most to me from those visits was John’s presence. He always had a warmth about him that immediately put people at ease. He was friendly, positive, and always seemed genuinely happy to see the people around him. Even in passing, he struck me as the kind of person who had a lifetime of great stories to tell and the kind of personality that made people want to stop and listen.

I’m so grateful to have witnessed the bond between John and Melissa, because sometimes the greatest expressions of love aren’t grand gestures. Sometimes they’re as simple as showing up, thinking of someone, and bringing them a drink on an ordinary day. Those are the moments that come to mind when I think of John, and they speak volumes about the kind of man he is.
