Protective Gear Was Optional

A Story from Bonnie Schelter-Brown
I just drove by our old house on Hawksville Dr. and I couldn’t help but think about the many hockey games on that driveway. I especially liked when it was just John and I and he used to get me to run with my stick between my legs so I could “deflect the puck”. How many bruises did I get from Johns big slap shot.
I also recently had a conversation with one of Johns old teammates who said when John got the puck at the blue line the other team just got out of the way because he had a wicked shot.
What wimps - I took those shots all the time with no protective gear on at all - just a hockey stick to protect me.
We always had sports in common - the baseball games out in the field every night after supper all summer long that inspired John to coach the young girls ball team (around 13 years old).
We all poured into his brown and tan van and went from game to game listening to Alan Parsons Project.
Thanks coach!
